gtk1 fonts look awful

Bug #87930 reported by Martin Pool

gtk+1.2 (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

On a fairly fresh and untweaked Feisty install the fonts in remaining gtk1 apps look very bad (see screenshot).

I have a Dell 2407WFP monitor which reports (correctly) non-square pixels. That may be part of it?

Hi Martin,
can you try to follow the intructions given by Obleak in bug #71071 ?
Does it increase the quality of fonts in gtk1 apps?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Various attempts have been made to make the appearance more pleasing (I even "ported" antialiasing once), but the better approach (for upstream) is to use GTK+ 2/Qt 4/etc.

Andreas, I think this was basically a dupe of bug 71071.

Daniel, this goes beyond just lack of antialiasing in gtk+1.2. The way it's set up means that the remaining gtk1 apps in Intrepid look far worse than they did on Debian 7 years ago.
