But seems that no update has been done for this bug. Yesterday, in Karmic, worked fine and today pictures had... dissapeared.

Probably a mime database problem:

I have done:
$ sudo update-mime-database /usr/share/mime
and
$ update-mime-database ~/.local/share/mime/
restarted and no luck.
Then I have deleted both ~/.local/share/mime and /usr/share/mime, restarted and neither luck.

I think is not the same error.

I am also seeing this bug. Double clicking a jpg file shows just that picture, and all other jpgs are not found. I don't have google earth loaded, so it's unlikely related to the other bug suggested in #4.

I removed my ~/.local/share/mime because of bug #444962. After

$ mkdir -p ~/.local/share/mime/packages
$ update-mime-database ~/.local/share/mime

the problem persists.

Me too. This only started in the past couple of days (I've been running aptitude safe-upgrade daily since karmic beta) - and no new version of gthumb has arrived in that period. I've tried update-mime-database without effect.

Changed in gthumb (Ubuntu):

I think is a GoogleEarth issue. I have uninstalled googleearth and googleearth-data (installed from medibuntu) and removed both ~/.local/share/mime and /usr/local/share/mime and gthumb is working as expected.

Please, do the same and post if this problem is only from googleearth.

It's that step that fixed it. ~/.local/share/mime isn't being read
correctly by some libraries until your session is restarted with the
fixed versions.

Yes, removing ~/.local/share/mime fixes the problem.

I have no ~/.local/share/mime, and googleearth is not installed. But removing /usr/local/share/mime was enough to get gthumb working again.

Neither of these fixed it for me (even with logout or reboot):
remove/rename ~/.local/share/mime/
update-mime-database ~/.local/share/mime/

But this did fix it:
remove/rename /usr/local/share/mime

BTW, I have GoogleEarth installed, but I haven't run it in months, and gThumb has always worked before after I've run GoogleEarth.

gThumb broke after I upgraded to Karmic beta a couple of weeks ago.

Nice,
$ sudo update-mime-database /usr/share/mime
$ update-mime-database ~/.local/share/mime/
Worked for me.

Forgive my poor English ...
If the actions in mime folders doesn't not solve the issue, verify that the name of the pictures that gthumb doesn't show includes the extension of the file ".jpg" Unknown file extension is recognized by nautilus but gthumb doesn't.
I have the same problem but it occurs only in the directories where I have renamed the pictures using gthumb. I didn't include the original file extension (%e) in the new name of the file... I can see the pictures with nautilus and open it with gthumb but it doesn't show the directory...
