This might be fixed in GStreamer Good Plug-ins 0.10.24. From the release notes:

# 620358 : [matroskademux] Sorenson Squish WebM output seeking issues
# 620743 : matroskademux: refactor delta unit handling
# 619485 : matroskademux: skip buffers before a late keyframe (QoS)

Those are GNOME bug numbers. The corresponding bug reports are at:

Please test with the Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" alpha 3 Live CD. After booting, and before testing, please use Synaptic Package Manager to upgrade Totem and the gstreamer packages, in particular the update of gstreamer0.10-plugins-good to 0.10.24.3-1ubuntu1

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. A new version of GStreamer is available on Maverick and we are wondering if this bug is still an issue for you with that version? Could you please test and comment back? Thanks in advance.

I had this problem in ubuntu 10.04 and have it still. mkv files will run smoothly for anything from one minute to half an hour or even more. Then it starts to get choppy but the audio is file. Restarting totem fixes the problem and I can even play the parts of the mkv file which were choppy before and they will run fine.

I also sometimes experience choppy video with avi files (XviD) but that only lasts for a second or two and then it goes back to being smooth.

In it's of interest: My video card is a Mobility RADEON HD4570 and I use the radeon driver.

This bug has seen no activity for almost 6 years. Also, official support for Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" has ended. If this issue is still occurring on Ubuntu 16.04 "Xenial Xerus" please run ubuntu-bug to file a new bug report so that we can get a fresh set of log files and system info.
