Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

Opening a video file that's apparently and XVID MPEG4 encoded mediafile, won't play in Lucid, with all gstreamer plugins installed. It says the codec is missing and the codec search doesn't return any findings. "no packages with the requested plugins found: XVID MPEG-4 decoder"

but I have every gstreamer plugin set known to man installed. what am I doing wrong? I know VLC plays everything, but sometimes it's nice to just being able to double click a file and play it, I mean I had it working in karmic, so there must be a way of fixing this :) ideas?

gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg is the FFmpeg plugin for GStreamer. Try installing that.

@madbiologist: what's a "problem file"? Please, specify that, and I'll provide it. Also, I'm not sure the linked bug is really a duplicate. It doesn't refer what the missing codec is (OK, perhaps it does in the screenshots, but I can't read them), it refers specifically to audio and subtitles, but not to video, and was closed because it was lacking necessary information to debug the issue.

I also had this bug - when I open a video file (like an avi or flv or mp4). However I found a solution on the ubuntu forums - I ran the following commands:

rm ~/.gstreamer-0.10/*
This removed the Gstreamer settings for the current user.

I then installed Gstreamer-Tools (check in synaptic to see if you already have it, if not install it - or run "sudo apt-get install gstreamer-tools" without quote marks).

and then ran the gstreamer-tools command:
gst-inspect
to rebuild the gstreamer settings.

This fixed playing the video layer for all these formats!

I hope you find this useful.

Matt

I tried your solution, gst-inspet found "xvid: xviddec: XviD video decoder" but it didn't fix the problem.

@lelamal - What I meant was please attach to this bug an XVID MPEG4 encoded mediafile which won't play in Lucid.

@madbiologist: I don't think what you ask is a viable option, at least in my case, for it would mean to upload "2001 A Space Odyssey", totalling 1,4 GiB. I'm told it's very, very similar to the one that can be found on The Pirate Bay by the title of "2001 A Space Odyssey KLAXXON", in case someone wouldn't mind downloading a pirated copy. But I'm confident in that there must be a simpler way to address this bug.

@Bright Lightning: thanks for the tip. However, I'd rather wait for an official fix than fiddling with things I don't understand quite well.

I have similar problem with external display attached to netbook (Compaq Mini 100c).

It looks like video overlay problem or something. Because when totem is on built-in display it's window is blank and at the very top of display I can see 1 px height line of video I'm trying to watch.

And when external display isn't connected I can see video.

I can confirm this on Maverick, as well.
