Thank you for your bug report. Are you able to reproduce this crash ? If yes, could you please install libgstreamer0.10-0-dbg, gstreamer-plugins*-dbg, libglib2.0-dbg, follow https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace and attach the resulting file to this bug report. This will greatly help us in tracking down your problem.

I've just got this crash with Totem and Rhythmbox trying to play different files, so this might be a gstreamer issue.

I'll get a backtrace with debugging symbols soon.

BTW alsa-lib and alsa-utils were updated yesterday, so I guess this could be related to that.

Attached a backtrace after installing those dbg packages.

This is 100% reproducible when trying to play an mp3 file (haven't tried other formats). For example:
totem /path/to/file

Thank you Emilio, I think that this backtrace is not better than the previous one, maybe I forgot some debug packages... I added a gstreamer bug task and bumped this one as confirmed.

I upgraded alsa-utils this morning (a couple of hours ago) which was supposed to show a notification asking me to run asoundconf set-default-card. After a reboot the notification was showed, and after running that command everything works again.

Not a totem bug.

And not a gstreamer bug. If this is a bug, it's in alsa-utils. I thought it should call asoundconf in postinst, but you need to tell it which sound card you want (e.g. 'asoundconf set-default-card Intel') so this might not be possible.

Angel Guzman Maeso: Please try to run 'asoundconf set-default-card' and configure your default card as Emilio said to see if it fixes the issue.

Note that you first need to run 'asoundconf list' to see the list of audio cards
you have, and then pass one to 'asoundconf set-default-card', as in 'asoundconf
set-default-card Intel'.

$ asoundconf set-default-card ICH6

Reopening gstreamer's task. Did I say it's not a gstreamer bug? :)

The alsa's asoundconf thing didn't work for Angel (he's just mailed me in Spanish). I can't reproduce this anymore, but hey, I don't have any evidence of this not being gstreamer's fault...
