Bug Description

Hi. In gnome-sound-properites, when selecting the test-button for sound-capture, I get an error message (in german, sorry): "Es konnte keine Test-Weiterleitung für »gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat« erstellt werden". In english this should be something like "couldn#t create a pipeline for ...", i guess. The error-message occurs no matter which recording device i select. After that, the window freezes.

cat /proc/asound/cards:
 0 [I82801DBICH4 ]: ICH4 - Intel 82801DB-ICH4
                      Intel 82801DB-ICH4 with ALC655 at 0xd0000c00, irq 10

 P.S.: Kernel is 2.6.20-15 generic

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is being marked as Won't Fix for the kernel version the bug was submitted about. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .
However, the issue that you reported is one that should be possible to test with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .
If you do decide to test with the development release of Ubuntu please comment on this bug report and include at least the minimal information requested at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Hello Brian Murray.
Sorry it took me some time. I tested GG tribe 5 and the problem is still there. I started the desktop CD, then selected System -> Preferences -> Sound from the menu. In the attachment you find a screenshot. I clicked on "Sound capture" Test and the error message popped up (2nd screenshot). I included the minimal information, if you need further info please let me know.

Thanks for your report, can you test the same with alsamixer and tell us the results? could be a gnome-media bug (because of the pipeline).

I decided to answer here, is that ok?
What do you mean: "test the same with alsamixer?" The device is set to "Intel 82801DB-ICH4 (Alsa Mixer)". With this, only "Test Sound" works when choosing for Sound Capture, not even OSS works. The same when I choose as device "Realtek ALC655 rev 0 (OSS Mixer)". More options I do not have.
