Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

In Karmic, since upgrade of totem and gstreamer a few days ago, totem can no longer play rmvb or rm files.

There's no error or warning messages, even invoked with --debug option. It simply doesn't play.
I've gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly installed.

I can play rmvb files with gst-lauch, but not with totem.

This is actually a bug of libtotem-plparser.
After applying this patch, everything's ok.

This is fixed upstream and if karmic updates to "libtotem-plparser12" version 2.28.1 this should be fixed.

Sorry, I am a novice. I have this problem. I follow the link to the git.gnome.org. However, I can't find the patch. How do I do? I can't find the solution at git.gnome.org

Sorry, but in Karmic with libtotem-plparser12 version 2.28.1-1 the bug is still there.

Try to run this gst-launch-0.10 playbin2 uri=http://bible.ort.org/webmedia/t1/0101.ra and you'll still get the same "plugin "/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstladspa.so" failed to initialise" error and no playing.

Or download any of .ra files from that URI and store them locally, then try to play them - no luck and the same error.

In Hardy however these files play just fine with both Totem and gst-launch.

vito, I am using kamic, but I don't get errors when following your instructions. Could you please comment on the upstream bug since you are getting the error? Thanks.

This is interesting. I get this error in 2 Karmic's. One is a long history upgrade starting from Feisty, Gutsy, Hardy, Intrepid, and then Karmic. And another one is a fresh install on VirtualBox.

In both gstreamer is installed with selected plugins (the same plugins are installed in my Hardy that does not throughs this error) from Karmic repositories, and this includes gstreamer-plugin-bad and gstreamer-plugin-ugly.

And I have this error in both of them.

Anyway, I've reported the problem to upstream before I posted it here. You might be interested to take a look at what was said in regards to Karmic. Here is the link: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=603549. See the comment #7 by upstream developer.

Thanks vito. Seems like this bug is caused by primarily by gst-plugins-ugly and for totem by totem-pl-parser. I linked the gstreamer issue here, too. Ubuntu 10.04 currently ships gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly 0.10.13-2, but the issue has been fixed for a later version. When Ubuntu 10.04 ships the new version, this bug should be fixed. It might qualify for backporting.
