I own a Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 07) using SPDIF (coaxial)
After I've tried to play the .mp3 file I've lost all my sound output even using VLC (over SPDIF)

No sound either using flash on Firefox.
I was able to regain sound over SPDIF (VLC) runing:
(after close all open programs)
$ iecset audio true
Then you can activate (uncheck & check) your digital output (SB Live!) with alsa mixer or gnome.
