Please post your partition layout ('sudo parted -l'). It would also help if you could recall the exact version when it last worked (both Ubuntu and Windows partitions); if necessary perhaps successively downgrade all the grub* packages to versions from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+publishinghistory ...

Comment 6 in bug 973095 indicates the following:

"Also affects me. Kernel 3.2.0-20, 3.2.0-21 unaffected. 3.2.0-22 and 3.2.0-23 are broken and refuse to boot."

These are my partitions:
/dev/sda1 - windows 7 system drive
/dev/sda2 - linux rootfs
/dev/sda3 - ntfs drive
/dev/sda4 - windows 7 bootloader, i guess
grub-install /dev/sda fixed my problem. The strange thing is I've already had it installed to my mbr.

I've had the same problem and can't install ubuntu 12.04 in dual boot with Windows 7. After install it simply doesn't boot, and after a few tries, only Windows 7 starts.

Ok. After a few tries, I restored Windows 7 boot through "bootsect", erased all linux partitions... Run chkdsk... Then I used an old Ubuntu 11.04 DVD to install and create new partitions.
My favorite scheme are: 1GB /boot primary partition, a extended partition for everything else and a "swap" partition with the size of the memory available. It worked well.
After all that, I put the Ubuntu 12.04 DVD and used an update without total erase of personal data and programs in ubuntu 11.04. It installed and worked.
Finally, I did a DVD install with update. But this time a choose a fresh install. No partioning change since the 11.04 install.
It worked fine.
I assumed then it was a partitioning problem, but I don't know what caused it.
Dual boot is working normal.
