Bug Description

I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 about a week ago (around the end of March 2012), and have upgraded the system last night (April 3, 2012). The upgrade included kernel upgrades. After the upgrade, the grub does not work properly. Although the initial grub menu shows up, it then complains that "error: out of partition. hit any key.". So I did it, then the system boots up.

Also, when I take a look at Disk Utility, I noticed there is a 1.1GB SSD partition, which I have never created, in my system. Three HDDs installed in my computer are displayed under the installed devices, but the 1.1GB SSD partition is displayed under attached devices. What the heck is this???

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/973095/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

This just started happening to me. The result it I can boot to ubuntu (although it displayed the error message) I cannot boot my windows partition though.

As for selecting the distribution and package, I'm pretty sure it's grub but launchpad isn't making this easy.

Affects me as well. I have the following layout:

sda (HDD):
/dev/sda1* 100G ext4 (unused)
/dev/sda2 10G swap
/dev/sda4 100G ext4 /
/dev/sda3 Extended
/dev/sda5 500G ext4 /home

sdb (SSD):
/dev/sdb1 6G swap
/dev/sdb2* 2G /boot

(*=partition marked bootable)
Grub is installed on /dev/sda and /dev/sdb, but I'm booting it from sda.

Booting works fine.

Also affects me. Kernel 3.2.0-20, 3.2.0-21 unaffected. 3.2.0-22 and 3.2.0-23 are broken and refuse to boot.
