Grub2 bootsplash is oversized and no VTs with Nvidia GT330M

Bug Description
My root is on an encrypted LVM volume, so I am prompted for a passphrase on boot, but the bootsplash screen does not fit on the screen. See attachment.
Also, and I'm assuming this is related, I have no VTs available - Ctrl-Alt-
