I was replacing Natty with Oneiric beta 1, I installed it on a logical partition (Multi-boot with Windows).

Does this still happen with the final 11.10 release? Do you have an EFI system partition? I assume you are using 64-bit, booted into UEFI mode?

I got the same message on fresh Kubuntu 11.10 (64 bit) install on Lenovo edge E320 that has EFI enabled. It turned out to be caused by missing the grub-efi package on the installation media.
Once I retried install with a working internet connection everything worked fine.
