I did an apt-get source grub-common to try to debug the issue, but the executable I built from source seems to work:

root@snoopy:/home/nfl# grub-probe -d /dev/sda3
grub-probe: error: unknown filesystem.
root@snoopy:/home/nfl# grub2-1.99~rc1/grub-probe -d /dev/sda3
