Bug Description

Binary package hint: grub2

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - Received this error the past few times I've run the update manager. Ran "apt-cache policy packagename" per instructions, came back with "unable to locate package name".

This could very well be an issue on my system, just thought I'd go ahead and submit it to see if other users are having the same issue or if the data I provide is valuable in troubleshooting. Thank you!

The terminal log says:

  /etc/default/grub: 9: splash”: not found

It seems that you've edited /etc/default/grub in a way that made its syntax invalid. You need to edit it again and fix it. You can test whether you've got it right using 'sh -n /etc/default/grub', which should produce no output if the file has valid syntax.

Bug 484499 is about the fact that the upgrade crashed rather than warning you about this and giving you the opportunity to fix it.
