Bug Description

Binary package hint: grub2

Hello!
I just upgrade 10.4 to 10.10, and all is ok… But, rebooting lead me at:
"
error: the symbol `grub_xputs` not found.
grub rescue>
"

What can I do to repair grub?

I'm using Ubuntu on CD to have access to internet.

If you want some files… Well, tell me!
Thank's very very much in advance
Laurent

I've tryed your link…
"
sudo mount /dev/sdb /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdb
"
(from your link)…
Rebooting result in a black screen…

But thanks for your help.

I have the same problem. When it came time during the installation to install Grub I chose to use the maintainers version instead of the existing Grub file. I ran the compare and there was very little difference between the two so I chose the newer one.

This has happened before. I think I can replace Grub by booting from the Alternate? CD and choosing Rescue/Repair or something like that.

Hum…
In fact it was a black screen before (??) grub (I mean, just after system check-up, at the time where I use to have grub choice for system selection).
Nevertheless:
lspci | grep "VGA":
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 3200 Graphics

Well, no it work find! ;-)
Thanks very much for your help

I resolved this problem by following the CHROOT instructions from this post: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9836539&postcount=5

I am somewhat surprised this happened in the first place though. I just did the normal software upgrade update. Anyways, glad to have users like drs305 who spend a lot of time putting useful posts like the one above to correct these type of problems.

Thanks :)
