On first boot post-install only see "GRUB" with blinking cursor

Bug Description

Binary package hint: grub2

Using lucid lynx beta2, clean install to /dev/sdb1 (there are also /dev/sda, /dev/sdc disks and /dev/sdd cdrom) results in "GRUB " with blinking cursor post-install.

Reboot and "grub-install" in VT shell fixes it. (gnome-session and gnome-panels were too broken to use after first boot, panels not displaying unless I hit alt-f1, tab over and keep changing monitor sizes, nautilus constantly crashing, etc)

This is an old dual-athlon machine with Matrox G450 dual-VGA out. Ran SuSE for several years with no issues.

Please attach /var/log/installer/syslog and /var/log/installer/partman
so that I can see what the installer was doing.

Was this definitely beta-2, or a daily build from around the same time
as beta-2? (Or, in other words, from what URL did you download the CD
image?)

The beta2 desktop iso was downloaded from releases.ubuntu.com yesterday. Windows says its 696mb (712,330KB or 729,425,920 bytes). Appears to be built April 6th, md5sum says:

[Path] / filename MD5 sum
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[C:\DOCUME~1\artur\My Documents\Downloads\]
ubuntu-10.04-beta2-desktop-i386.iso 100% d5c257bb85664afc97d62b04a5994f02

Also, I am attaching what my screen looks like when I log in. In order to see my gnome-panels I must hit alt-f1 and go to system->preferences->monitors and resize my screens to some other dimension. Then I can resize back to normal dimension and keep the normal looking desktop. I have a Matrox G450 dual-VGA; only one monitor is detected as "Uknown" (the display is cloned to both.) Direct rendering is on, 3D extensions seem OK. I understand the mga driver sucks, and perhaps the fact I get: "compiz (core) - Warn: No GLXFBConfig for depth 32" when I try to run compiz by hand is relevant.

Either way, the gnome-panels should work for Ubuntu. I have no GRUB or Gnome problems with Fedora 13 beta. And I had no problems with SuSE 9.x on this machine. If you can help me also file this gnome-related bug (quickly) that would be appreciated.

Why is this bug still marked Incomplete?

I reproduced it on beta2 reinstall, only this time I got the grub> menu instead of the GRUB and flashing cursor. Still could not boot my system without manually specifying root, kernel, initrd and running 'grub-install' by hand.

Also, my display (panels missing or wrongly sized) is still messed up on lucid; it was not on karmic.

There is no support on such deprecated version; that one has died long time ago.
