Did you modify the file /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme or a file in /etc/grub.d/ ? please attach it to this report

That's not the way it works.

In order to use a theme you need to change GRUB_TERMINAL=gfxterm in /etc/default/grub
I agree it's not well documented (not to say not at all) The grub wiki (http://grub.enbug.org/FrontPage) is a good source of information.

I'm changing the status of this report to a documentation issue.

Thanks! Another usability enhancement in the upgrade process would be to let me know that the file is corrupt and to fix it first, or better yet offer to fix it for me. But thanks for the doco on how to do it properly!
