After a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 and after updating the packages from the "Update Manager" a 118 Mb update 166 packages including the latest Linux Kernel. I got the following:

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
-Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
     -Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
     -Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
-Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
