error: no such device following install

Bug Description

Installed ubuntu on an ibm t42 that had a wiped hard drive. installed latest version. upon restart received the following message:
error: no such device: 46023111-32ca-4d0d-8d86-aa6a5a994b8c
Press any key to continue..._
Pressing any key takes me back to the GNU GRUB version 1.97~beta 4 menu
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14- generic (recovery mode)

either choice takes me back to the error.
