Bug Description

Binary package hint: grub2

grub-set-default --help gives the following :-

~$ grub-set-default --help
Usage: grub-set-default [OPTION] entry
Set the default boot entry for GRUB.

-h, --help print this message and exit
-v, --version print the version information and exit
--root-directory=DIR Use the directory DIR instead of the root directory

ENTRY is a number or the special keyword `default\'.

There is also no documentation for the same either in /usr/share/doc/grub2/ or/and
/usr/share/doc/grub-common

There is also no manpage for grub-set-default as well so how is a user supposed to change it.

From what I could figure out it basically changes stuff in /etc/default/grub

In Debian we have a wontfix bug for removing it. See #482388
It's just there to set the saved default value to 0 in grub-legacy if you choose to chainload grub2 from grub-legacy.
It doestn't at all have an effect in grub2

Changed in grub2 (Ubuntu):

I think this is essentially the same as bug 216178; my current version of the patch to fix that bug includes a reimplementation of grub-set-default for grub2.
