Further to this. A reboot of the system first took me to rescue mode. I exited from this and the system has booted to 20.10

Although I selected to install updates during the os installer they appeared after this first boot. I now have a message about continuing to install without grub. It looks like I'm having problems with the efi partition

After a lot of googling, I resolved this by creating an efi partition during the setup

Thank you for the bug report, according to the log the error was

'error: cannot copy `/usr/lib/grub/x86_64-efi-signed/grubx64.efi.signed' to `/boot/efi/EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi': No space left on device.'

Could you give some details on your partition setup. Did you have no efi partition or was it too small?

I didn't have an efi partition setup. I've got a legacy BIOS (9 years old), and my previous partition layout with a fresh install of 20.04 was just /, /home and swap, where originally I just went to reformat /

I went through the installer again and created a 200Mb efi partition and all was fine.

Is there not a way to detect legacy BIOSes?

I think the current installer supports BIOS only installs just fine.
