Since the update to 2.02+dfsg1-
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
A downgrade to 2.02+dfsg1-
It looks very much like the changes in the patch below are insufficient for the menu activation to initialise the terminal:
* debian/
only set text-mode when we're actually going to need it.

I'm unable to reproduce this on an X230 or T450s. I would have thought the firmware to be pretty similar, at least enough that I could see this issue when a similar config is applied.
This needs more investigation in the code for the console module. I've had a quick look, nothing obvious jumped out; and I've also confirmed that while this patch is still not upstreamed, it is applied on other distros (Fedora).
