You edited your /etc/default/grub file and fouled it up:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" usbhid.quirks=0x0c45:0x7603:0x4

The option you added at the end needs to be within the quotes.

Changed in grub2 (Ubuntu):
status: Confirmed → Invalid

Hi Phillip (I am asssuming you are a person and not a computer),

Perhaps instead of saying "you edited your ...grub file ...and fouled it up" you should write "your grub file was edited ...and fouled up" since I (me, the person) did not edit the grub file. I don't even know what a grub file is.

In addition, I cannot tell if your message indicates the problem or the solution. Please assume that I am an idiot (new to ubuntu/linux, noob, or whatever) and that I have no clue what you are talking about.

It sounds like there is a solution, but I need the details spelled out so that I know what needs to be done. For example, perhaps it goes like this?

1) find grub file
2) open editor to edit grub file (probably need admin privileges)
3) change GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" usbhid.quirks=0x0c45:0x7603:0x4
   to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" "usbhid.quirks=0x0c45:0x7603:0x4"
[ (i.e., include last part in quotes), or whatever the correct correction is -- it is hard to tell exactly what needs to be done]

Could you or someone please let me know if this is the correct solution, or please post the correct solution?

Thanks!
Joe

Rather than add a second set of quotes, you need to just move it to be within the first set. That is, move the end quote to the end of the line instead of being in the middle of it.

You can edit it by running "sudo nano /etc/default/grub" and entering your password.

Thanks, Phillip, that is a great help. I really appreciate it.

As I said, I am new to Ubuntu/Linux, and so far I am really impressed. I love figuring things out, but with a four-year-old and other time commitments, it is really tough to find the time to learn all the fine details. I have found these kinds of intricacies challenging (installing, updating, finding software) -- especially when I just want things to work -- so thanks for taking the time to spell it out for me. I'll make the edit when I get home later tonight (I hope). Then I'll run the update again. Thanks again for your kind help!

Well, I made the change. It took a few tries until I figured it out (e.g., I don't have nano; I have gedit), but I made the change and installed the latest updates. The only problem is that now when I boot I get an unwanted OS selection menu from linux. Now I have to try to figure out how to get rid of that... I assume it was in amongst the update packages, but all the names are so cryptic, I have no idea which one(s) it might be. Well, I guess that will be a different post...

Thank for your help!
