This is a reoccurring problem.  It began at some point when I had Ubuntu 14.10, and I hoped by upgrading to 15.04 it would go away.  No such luck.
This is how it goes:I run Synaptic, refresh the repositories, mark all upgrades, and apply.  Here is the window output: (synaptic:4168): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_child_watch_add_full: assertion 'pid > 0' failed(Reading database ... 313471 files and directories currently installed.)Preparing to unpack .../xserver-xorg-video-intel_2%3a2.99.917-1~exp1ubuntu2.3_i386.deb ...Unpacking xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.99.917-1~exp1ubuntu2.3) over (2:2.99.917-1~exp1ubuntu2.2) ...Processing triggers for man-db (2.7.0.2-5) ...Setting up grub-pc (2.02~beta2-22ubuntu1.2) ...Installing for i386-pc platform.Installation finished. The update hangs at this point.  I have let it go on for hours overnight, but it never finishes. From some on-line discussions, I found that it you can kill Grub if it stalls while writing the config.dat file, which will allow dpkg to continue.I ran fuser in a root window to get the process ID to kill it:fuser -v /var/cache/debconf/config.dat                     USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND/var/cache/debconf/config.dat:                     root       4234 F.... frontend
and kill it:kill 4234
Which allows dpkg to continue:dpkg: error processing package grub-pc (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script was killed by signal (Terminated)Setting up xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.99.917-1~exp1ubuntu2.3) ...doneProcessing triggers for libc-bin (2.21-0ubuntu4) ...Errors were encountered while processing: grub-pcE: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)A package failed to install.  Trying to recover:Setting up grub-pc (2.02~beta2-22ubuntu1.2) ...Installing for i386-pc platform.Installation finished. No error reported.Generating grub configuration file ...Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.16.0-39-genericFound initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.16.0-39-genericFound Windows 8 (loader) on /dev/sda1
Of course, it hangs here again, just as before. So I run fuser again:fuser -v /var/cache/debconf/config.dat                     USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND/var/cache/debconf/config.dat:                     root       5461 F.... frontendand then kill it again:kill 5461
Which gives me an error window:E: grub-pc: subprocess installed post-installation script was killed by signal (Terminated)

meanwhile, in the process window:dpkg: error processing package grub-pc (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script was killed by signal (Terminated)doneErrors were encountered while processing: grub-pc
But at least my updates seem to get done this way.
Thanks!

That didn't really answer my question. How long did you give it before you killed it, and can you try manually running update-grub?

Overnight, and yes, I did run update-grub, same result.

It appears to be creating a child process and waiting for it to finish. Can you add '-ff' to the strace options and try again? This should generate a separate log for each child process.
