Ubuntu 14.04.1 is running as native partition on PowerVM. So there is no guest involved. On Alpine, only PowerVM is supported.

Hi,

I have recreated the issue on the partition now. Below is the snapshot from vterm during partition reboots:

Elapsed time since release of system processors: 6 mins 22 secs
error: no suitable video mode found.

Ubuntu 15.04 works fine with Alpine on PowerVM as a native partition. The above problem is occurring only with Ubuntu 14.04 which is officially supported on Alpine. Here is the working Ubuntu 15.04 version working on another system.

It looks like we're already into the kernel by the time it reboots, reassigning to linux.

It would be quite helpful to see a boot attempt with "quiet" and "splash" stripped off the kernel commandline (edit it in grub), so we can see exactly how far it gets.

I'm 99% sure that this is just the grub2 issue that is known and already fixed upstream (and in 15.04).

Linux is setting one bit in the C-A-S vectors, grub2 is unsetting (or v.v., I forget exactly) and so the negotiation fails and we reboot continuously.

LTC Bug 111313 - LP1334793, closed in 14.10.

AFAIK, 14.04.1/2 do not support PowerVM, so this is only targetted to 14.04.3.

I agree with Nish. It seems that this bug is the same as 111313 and I already open a ticket [1] to backport the fix for 14.04.

This bug was opened when we were doing early bringup of Alpine systems. Since I don't have system to test the fix as of now, I would suggest you to close it as resolved.
When a system becomes available, I'll test the fix to make sure the problem is resolved.

Thanks & Regards,
