Bug Description

I am unsure if this is the bug in Grub, but it happens at boot time, so i'm unsure what else it can be.

What happens:

When i boot the computer i get the error:
  error: malformed file
  Press any key to continue...

After i press some key the system boots.

What i expect to happen:

No such error should happen at the boot time.

Hrm... actually that specific error seems to indicate a corrupt file*system*. Do you have a separate /boot partition? Please boot into rescue mode and choose the fsck option from the menu to check and repair the filesystem and see if that resolves it.

I do have a separate filesystem for /boot. I have restarted into the LiveUSB from which i've installed the system and ran e2fsck -f on that partition. It has reported that everything was fine. The error message still remains, however.

Can you run filefrag -v /boot/grub/grubenv?

That is very strange. The only way you get this message is for the blocks of grubenv to be out of order, but it is only one block long so that isn't possible. The only thing I can think of is that you have a different grubenv somewhere. Can you run the boot info script and post the results?

bootinfo mentions sdc. Is there any other device connected to the system when you boot? A usb key, and external hard drive, an SD card or anything similar?

It didn't matter if there were other devices. It was one of the first thing that i've tried.

Now, however, i've completely reinstalled OS and am happily using XUbuntu 14.04, which did not produce any such error.
