latest kernel update doesn't load logon prompt

using 10.04.2 LTD
have logon prompt enabled, but the latest kernel update does not load the logon prompt.

instead of bypassing the prompt, the system freezes and can only be restarted by pressing the power off button on the computer.

re-installing grub seems to have solved this problem.

the latest kernel update (mar. 19, 2011) produces the same problem.
i noticed that if it gets past the logon, the system would freeze.
re-installing grub seems to fix the problem again.
