I'm confirming this bug as I've reproduced it three times on the one machine.

I have both an ATA (with win 2000) and an S-ATA HDD (all the rest). Three times now I've tried to install GRUB to the same partition as the rest of the install (I want to use GAG as boot manager). This problem is of course totally blocking me from installing Ubuntu (6.10) without overwriting the MBA which Windows 2000 has written.

I am aware of the many workarounds - but this is the configuration I think is best, if I can get Ubiquity/ GRUB to follow my instructions.

A quick search shows that grub _can_ install to S-ATA, so what's going on here?

Good to have that info, but what I meant was what partition were you trying to install too? Was it an ATA drive partition (hda etc) or and S-ATA drive partition (sda etc)?

On my laptop which is S-ATA only I got grub to install where I told it, but not on my mixed system.

Excuse for English, is Italian. I would want to make a multiboot. In mine
hardisk there is partition C: , where I have installed windows xp. In an
other partition I wanted to put ubuntu. The partition of ubuntu is
subdivided in swap and \ root respecting the minimal measures. At last
Ubuntu puts automatically grub in (hd0) and begins after the installation.
They are a beginner, like I can install GRUB where I want I, like you have
made you? Thanks for the aid

Apparently the device node doesn't exist. Huh?

The only thing that comes to mind is that maybe the device node doesn't exist in /target for some reason (this error message is from grub-install run inside the chroot).

Just to clarify Colin. The install works perfectly with the alternative CD using /dev/sda6 for grub

This is the error:

Nov 12 19:19:35 ubuntu grub-installer: error: Running 'grub-install --no-floppy "(hd0)"' failed.

For some reason it thinks hd0 is not able to install grub.

In partman, you have two drives.

1)
parted_server: OUT: 1 119296-513409023 513289728 primary fat16 /dev/mmcblk0p1

2)
parted_server: OUT: 1 32256-1998743039 1998710784 primary fat32 /dev/hda1

parted_server: OUT: 2 1998743040-17725478399 15726735360 primary ntfs /dev/hda2

parted_server: OUT: 5 17725510656-56951838719 39226328064 logical ntfs /dev/hda5

parted_server: OUT: 6 56951870976-77926302719 20974431744 logical ext2 /dev/hda6

parted_server: OUT: 7 77926334976-80023749119 2097414144 logical linux-swap /dev/hda7

Maybe it is trying to install it on the other drive it found, which could be an invalid device. I would try installing it on /dev/hda, which I believe is a valid parameter for grub. I looked online and it said that it can either have the device location (ex: /dev/hda or /dev/sda), or the grub name (ex: hd0 or hd1).

I hope that helps!
