Bug Description
Binary package hint: grub
I am using 10.04.1 LTS (stable) although this most likely applies to Maverick as well since it is lacking the same initial screen.
grub:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 0.97-29ubuntu60

grub2:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 1.98-1ubuntu7

I liked the initial screen that said “GRUB loading. please wait… Press Esc to enter the menu…”
That has been changed with the latest Grub which is not Grub2 but is. If you are thoroughly confused, think of this poor dumb user.
By reading Lucid release notes (everybody always reads all the release notes, right?) I discovered that I must hold down the Shfit key.
Since I liked the visual cue as to when I could press a key to go to the menu, I tried to make it reappear by 'sudo gedit /etc/default/grub'; changing GRUB_TIMEOUT_
The update occurred but nothing changed. I expected to have a visual cue that I could invoke the menu if I chose, yet still lack one.

And, a curious thing, this seems to occur with a new install and NOT from an excisting one.
The Ubuntu 10.04.01 system from which I type this comment, shows the startup message, “GRUB loading. please wait… Press Esc to enter the menu…” even after upgrade to most recent image.
So, I have noticed the problem only after an upgrade to Maverick, or a complete re-install back to Lucid when Maverick failed, and again when I went thru the upgrade - revert cycle.
