Examining your DpkgTerminalLog.txt file I notice the following. Have you modified any file permissions? Regardless I'll reassign to grub as this does not appear to be a kernel issue:

Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... /usr/sbin/update-grub: line 1511: /boot/grub/menu.lst.new: Operation not supported
User postinst hook script [/sbin/update-grub] exited with value 1
dpkg: error processing linux-image-2.6.28-12-generic (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

affects: linux (Ubuntu) → grub (Ubuntu)
summary: - package linux-image-2.6.28-12-generic 2.6.28-12.43 failed to
- install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit
- status 1
+ Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... /usr/sbin/update-grub: line 1511:
+ /boot/grub/menu.lst.new: Operation not supported

outdated report & no more maintained distro; please send a new one if that issue still exist (using ubuntu-bug)

Changed in grub (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid
