Bug Description

After installing Kubuntu Jaunty Beta on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo SI 3655 notebook I am greeted with a "operating system not found" message. The Kubuntu installer apparently fails to install grub. Kubuntu can be booted from the live-cd by choosing "Boot from harddisk" though.
The issue is fixed by booting into the live environment and issuing the following commands:
sudo grub
root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0,0)

If I remember correctly this also happens with Ubuntu/Kubuntu 8.10 and a few other distros - openSUSE 11.1 installs grub correctly though.

Notebook specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26 GHz
Mobile Intel GM45 Express / 1066 MHz
4 GB DDR2 (800) SDRAM
320GB WD SATA HD
Intel GMA 4500MHD

The work-around above fails in Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04) because the "grub" command is missing from grub2. See the following thread for an updated work-around:

After a lot of searching I have been unable to determine whether this is a bug in grub or a problem with the Amilo BIOS having some kind of affection for the Windows boot loader. Any insight would be appreciated - its such a shame to fail at the finish line after everything else on the laptop works perfectly out of the box.
