Bug Description

I am installing Ubuntu on an old Aspire 1400XV. The splash screen worked on the live cd but now all I get is a black screen by default. The machine does boot properly, there is just no splash screen.
I presume this is because by default the framebuffer is set to vga=785, I think this because explicitly setting the framebuffer to this value via grub has no effect. Setting the framebuffer to vga=788 and vga=791 makes the splash screen appear but it is off-centre. The higher value seems to be closer to having the splash screen near the centre. However trying vga=794 doesn't work. I just get the error:
"Undefined video mode number: 31a"
This is on 8.10 but I have been upgrading from 7.10.
