Cannot add per-kernel options for ABI versions

Bug Description

My /boot is shared between Ubuntu Hoary and Debian Sid, and I was going to use
the kopt_x_y_z flags in menu.lst to configure the root device for each kernel.
Sid has a kernel 2.6.12-1-686, and Hoary has a Breezy kernel, 2.6.12-6-686.
However, the update-grub code to check for version numbers doesn't match after
three digits so it's not possible to add custom kopts like kopt_2_6_12_6.

It probably isn't a good idea to share /boot between different systems this way, but yes, it would be nice if one could specify options this way

This is no more a supported version; and grub legacy upstream is also stopped, only receiving possible random fixes locally
