Bug Description

Binary package hint: grub

Ubuntu boots fine if after the GRUB menu shows, I'm picking the menu item manually by pressing "ENTER" on the keyboard.

If I let the GRUB timeout expire, Ubuntu doesn't boot and immediately restarts.

I'm using a Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 USB keyboard and BIOS set to 'emulate legacy USB keyboard' if that helps. Because without that option, Ubuntu's GRUB, Ubuntu LiveCD, in addition to many other boot-time applications cannot use the keyboard at all.

This seems to be somewhat configuration-specific as many other computers boot fine with GRUB.

I think it also relates to the Linux kernel.

I've tried experimenting with/disabling the following GRUB options, they have no effect to resolving this problem:
* hiddenmenu
* quiet
* splash

Description: Linux kernel image for version 2.6.22 on x86/x86_64
 This package contains the Linux kernel image for version 2.6.22 on x86/x86_64.

 Also includes the corresponding System.map file, the modules built by the
 packager, and scripts that try to ensure that the system is not left in an
 unbootable state after an update.

 Supports Server processors.

 Geared toward server systems.

 You likely do not want to install this package directly. Instead, install the
 linux-server meta-package, which will ensure that upgrades work correctly, and
 that supporting packages are also installed.

Hi Hendy,

Not sure if this is really kernel related, but the Hardy Heron Alpha series is currently under development and contains an updated version of the kernel. It would be helpful if you could test the latest Hardy Alpha release: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. Thanks.

Changed in linux-source-2.6.22:

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains.
