I propose on machines with UEFI that there should be a entry under Advanced options in GRUB to boot to a EFI shell.

 grub legacy upstream is stopped, only receiving possible random fixes locally. So the request have to be reported against grub2

The UEFI shell is, by UEFI security policy, not enabled in production firmware. So such an option would fail on all production systems. On places where a UEFI shell is available, this is selectable via the firmware itself. So this is not something that we would change in the grub2 package.

And to complete vorlon's answer, we have always provided an entry to "boot into UEFI firmware". as on of the boot options.

Yeah, the "boot into UEFI firmware" option is really cool.
Which is why I was thinking it would be cool to boot into a shell too. :)
