Crash during install of grub in 10.04 beta1

Install of kubuntu 10.04 beta1 ended with a popup saying it had crashed while installing grub. Then a dialog with the following backtrace:

I now can't get past this error while installing the release version of Kubuntu 10.04.

I have a separate /boot partition that I did not wish to format during installation in case something went wrong. The drive has partitions for Windows, swap, /home, /usr/local, and two partitions for the operating systems. One is occupied by 9.10, the other was created to hold 10.04.

The first time I ran the installer everything worked as expected with the 10.04 kernel images added to the grub menu. However I need to reinstall after making some manual changes to the authentication files in /etc that seemed to cause problems for dbus. All subsequent attempts to install following the same procedure as before now results in the ubiquity error during the installation of grub.

Update:

I bit the bullet and told the installer to format /boot. That didn't help at all, and of course, now I can't boot the machine either. I'm reinstalling 9.10 and waiting another few months before trying 10.04 again.
