Bug Description

I downloaded the ubuntu Lucid Beta iso from the website, and extracted wubi.exe from the iso and put it in the same folder as the ISO. I ran wubi with --skipmd5check and --force32bit and it created the disks properly, the installation completed as expected.

After reboot, I selected the "Ubuntu" menu from the bootloader and it dropped me to a grub2 shell. I tried loading from loop0 but it was unable to detect the partition type (I assumed that the disk was mounted in a loopback mode).

Anyways, ubuntu/disks has two correct images, but the grub folder is empty.

The log of the installer is here: http://pastebin.com/cKJjNC2q

I have had the same problem except i have a grub> shell not grub2>. When installing inside my windows file system. I tested this on windows xp and windows 7. (GNU GRUB vesion 1.98-1ubuntu1)
I found a grub.cfg file in /ubuntu/install/boot/grub/ on my physical harddrive. I printed it's contents and manually entered the SEARCH command, the LINUX command the INITRD command and finally BOOT to get the installer on its way. I chose the commands from the verbose mode section of the cfg file. It seems that grub is not loading the menu configuration at first boot up.
Once successfully installing the boot.cfg file disappers.

A work around to this i found that is faster than what i posted before is as follows: (the ones prefixed with *'s are manditory for this to work, the others just provide helpful informaion)
when at the grub prompt type [root] no brackets It comes back saying you are currently rooted in (loop0)
type *[search -s -f -n /ubuntu/install/boot/vmlinuz] (again no brackets)
type [root] again, It should come back saying something like HD0,1 or whatever partition your windows is.
type *[configfile /ubuntu/install/boot/grub/grub.cfg] this then starts the proper installation

Learning as I go :)

Because it has nothing to do with the grub package. It might, however, be related to the grub-installer package; assigning there.

affects: grub (Ubuntu) → grub-installer (Ubuntu)

Hi, the logic followed is as per C:\ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.cfg
You should reach the line: search -s -f -n /ubuntu/install/boot/vmlinuz
Since the condition [ -e /boot/grub/grub.cfg ] should evaluate to false in a new installation

Closing this very old bug since 10.04 and Wubi are both no longer supported.
