grub did not install with a previous dual boot of xp and win7. drive is partioned with sepatate partions and a swap file

Bug Description
Binary package hint: installation-
the installer did not create a working grub loader. I have a dual boot xp and win 7 system. I have each install in its own partition. I created a partition for the swap file and a logical partition for ubuntu with a / mount point. the installation shows when I inspect the partition.
