non-upgrade install crashed with failure to install GRUB on /dev/sda1

Installing on previously working (Ubuntu MATE 16.04) partition with reused /home and /swap. Had to add EFI partition manually. Thinkpad T430 has run Ubuntu MATE since 2016.
