Bug Description
Error (whatever the apport info includes) installing GRUB at end if install.
Beefy HP desktop. Booted from USB disk, everything seems to work just the install failed.
It insisted I create an EFI partition, which I did.

Which suggests it's a firmware issue, could you check if there is some bios update for your hardware?
