...on my Surface 4 Pro. Secure boot in BIOS was disabled prior the installation

is there an option to install grub or super grub separately?

John Ross, did you get an error about not being able to install grub-efi-amd64-signed to /target?

It might be worth trying another install without internet

The log has those lines
