failed to load grub during installation. THis occured with Xubuntu and ubuntu. Was previously OK Xubuntu.

Bug Description

Happens during installation of Xubuntu or Ubuntu 18.4.1. Message is "Executing 'grub-install/dev/sda failed' This is a fatal error."
changing to sda1, sdb and sdb1 also failed.
This machine previously had XUbuntu running happily.

My machine was effectively incapacitated during upgrade because removal of packages made my software unuseable. I thought I could fix this with a clean install. My computer is now dead.
