I was experiencing the same with only difference that was I was installing Ubuntu 16.04 LTS as a single OS. Also tried to find way around: http://askubuntu.com/questions/862946/unable-to-install-ubuntu-on-acer-aspire-es1-533, but did not have time to give it a try so far. BTW it seems not to be Ubuntu specific, because Fedora 25 crashed in the same way.

It is confirmed that it is not an Ubuntu specific bug. It can be installed and booted according to the guide here: http://community.acer.com/t5/E-F-and-M-Series-Laptops/Acer-Aspire-ES-15-ES1-533-C3UW-Legacy-BIOS-Missing/td-p/471754/page/2

So it is only a bad UEFI of this model making it difficult to install any Linux distribution (although not impossible).

I don't agree that this is a duplicate of 1639374, it also affects plain Ubuntu distro, tested with both 16.04.3 and 17.10. The workaround on askubuntu.com mentioned above worked for me, but for new users it would be really good if there was a way to make this work out of the box.

Current user experience is a machine lockup after spending significant time going through the installation process, which might cause lots of folks responding "dump that linux, I'll stick with windows".

This is an unsupported release now. Please think to install the next LTS 'Bionic 18.04'

@dino99: Did you see my previous comment? This also affects 16.04 LTS, so I doubt that this can be done away with as Invalid so easily.
