According to the syslog, you try to install Ubuntu in BIOS-Legacy mode without a "bios_grub" -partition on a GPT disk:
Aug 5 19:13:06 ubuntu grub-installer: Installing for i386-pc platform.
Aug 5 19:13:22 ubuntu grub-installer: grub-install: warning: this GPT partition label contains no BIOS Boot Partition; embedding won't be possible.
Aug 5 19:13:22 ubuntu grub-installer: grub-install: error: embedding is not possible, but this is required for cross-disk install.
Aug 5 19:13:22 ubuntu grub-installer: error: Running 'grub-install --force "/dev/sda"' failed.
