Installation of Ubuntu Gnome Xenial daily 19/03/16 fails because grub2 cant be installed.

You don't have an EFI system partition. Did the installer not warn you that you have to have one? Did you choose the something else option, or install side by side?

This was a clean installation attempt on a formatted SSD. I did not receive any warnings after setting up the partitions and pressing Continue.

The installation was similar to 15.10 installation process which went just fine on the same system. I then upgraded 15.10 to 16.04 which I'm now running.

I'm planning to test again the installation of 16.04 LTS on more recent installation media (beta 2) as soon as I receive a new SSD, hopefully next week. Will report back then.
