attempting to reinstall ubuntu 16.04 on a 5 hard drive system (not RAID) with /dev/sda being root and WD SSD which is chosen by default and I am unable to format. Need help.

Grub can not be installed on /dev/sda because it has no partitions. You either need to create at least one partition there, or choose to install grub to another drive instead.
