Well this is interesting:

grub-installer: grub-install: error: cannot open `/dev/sdb': Read-only file system.

I have no idea how that can possibly happen.

Oh, just like me to invent a new problem! By way everything working
fine. B refers to an external hard drive, with 2 partitions. One
contains a 32 bit version of 14.04 on which I installed the 64 bit. The
other is just a data partition.
