This bug affect also me, I had a similar disk partition with dual boot and after installing Ubuntu 12.10 I had no issue in executing Ubuntu, but I was completely unable to start my Win7 system.
I though was an error on MBR an I have taken this opportunity to format the disk completely, so I have reinstalled again Ubuntu making a new partition table:
1 Primary ext4 with mount point /
1 Primary ext4 with mount point /home
1 Extended with logical Swap
1 Extended FAT32 (with HP tools on my HP dv6 laptop)

At the end of installation process I had the "can't install in /dev/sda" error message, and rebooting the system, grub was unable to find the boot disk.
I tried different times also changing the home partition with and Extended ext4, but with the same result.
I have also tried with the Ubuntu Boot-Repair tool and other guides on the web to recover grub installation, but without success.

Now I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 without any issue.
Hope this will help to solve the problem.
