installing grub boot loader fails on thinkpad w520

Bug Description

grub install fails both when using ubuntu installer from 'try now' or 'install' option. BIOS has an option to allow for 'legacy' OSes (non-UEFI) to have priority over UEFI installs, and this option is enabled.
