grub failed to install on hda, b and c

Bug Description
ran the ubuntu desktop 12.04 x64 installer from usb stick, and at the end it failed to install grub on sda, sdb and sdc. upon failing to install on sdc I get the message that the installer has crashed.
sda and sdc are SATA SSDs, while sdb is a normal SATA drive

Tried the install again, with a different password for my user -- and got no problems.
The password used when I got trouble had a pipe as the first character, but I don't see why that should be problematic for installing grub from the USB stick...
